Pet of the Week- Quarantine Edition (Lost and Found Pets)

As we continue our “Stay Home, Stay Healthy” Pet of the Week segment, we want to touch on a topic we see a lot- lost and found pets. Losing a pet is scary, it’s like having a family member go missing. We also finding a lost pet can be stressful, because we all want them to find their way home. So, we’re sharing some tips on how to successfully reunite pets and families during the coronavirus pandemic.

If you’ve lost a pet:

  • Complete a lost pet report by phone or, better yet, on our website (you can also upload a photo)

  • If your licensed pet is registered with PetHub, they have resources- including poster layouts

  • Posters seem ‘old-school’ but work! Simple is okay, but do include a photo and contact info

  • Get the word out through social sites like Nextdoor, Facebook, Craigslist and findingrover.

A recent study found that most dogs don’t stray more than 1,000 feet from home. So, chances are your furry friend is nearby and will be reunited with you quickly.

If you’ve found a stray:

  • Care for it while you search for an owner. If you cannot, ask a neighbor or friend

  • Complete a found pet report by phone or through our website (you can upload a photo too)

  • If the pet is licensed, scan the QR code and contact PetHub

  • Have the microchip scanned- This can be done at a veterinarian’s office or call us for options

  • Flyers are a proven method and don’t have to be fancy- just a pictures and the facts

  • Social sites like Nextdoor, Facebook, Craigslist and findingrover. are great ways to spread the word

  • Found kitten(s)? If they are healthy and in a safe location, ‘watch and wait’ for mom to return

  • If all other options have failed, please call ACC and discuss options currently available to you

We know, it seems odd to find a stray and not call ACC for a pick up. But, ACC is currently practicing safety guidelines from national leaders in animal welfare that includes only responding to emergency issues, so we are asking neighbors to help each other right now. Our community does a great job uniting for the animals and, during these times, we look to you to work collectively and get pets home safely.

Helpful links:

  • To re-license your pet. We are currently waiving shipping fees!

  • To contact ACC by phone, please call 509-662-9577, opt. 1.
