Our History

Gwyneth and Bruce Mitchell’s dream of giving hope and homes to homeless animals in the Wenatchee Valley came to life when they founded the Wenatchee Valley Humane Society in 1967. Today, Wenatchee Valley Humane Society continues to honor their legacy and passion.

As society and culture change, so too do the needs of pets and the people who love them. WVHS is dedicating to meeting these ever-changing needs.

Over the last 55 years, the shelter has moved from caring for homeless animals to becoming a resource center. WVHS now provides a variety of services including caring for displaced pets, reuniting pets and the people who love them, rescuing injured and lost animals, providing spay/neuter programs, and keeping families and pets together in times of need with pet food banks, behavioral modification, investigating animal cruelties and adoption services.

Thanks to a community of generous donors, your WVHS has grown. 2015 the shelter underwent a much-needed transformation with a new building, including a Memorial Garden where community members can honor and remember loved ones and pets in a beautiful, permanent setting.

In 2016, a small on-site clinic was added to care for shelter animals’ medical needs and to expand the reach of spay/neuter and vaccination services to income-qualified pet owners.

Through its mission to build a community of responsible animal owners by providing education and outreach, animal care and control for protection, and rescue and adoption services, your Wenatchee Valley Humane Society is committed to continuing to grow and change with you. We look forward to providing you with even more resources and services in the future.
