Pet of the Week- Quarantine Edition (Train Your Cat)

Whether you’re a cat person, a dog person or any other type of pet person, the fact is you are likely spending a lot of time with your pet right now. So, we’d like to continue spending the next few weeks of “Stay Home, Stay Healthy” dedicating our Pet of the Week segment to your pets. This week, let’s talk cats!

Cats can be mysterious and seem aloof, but did you know you can actually train cats? It’s true. And a team at Wenatchee Valley Humane Society (WVHS) has been doing just that through a cat training program from The Jackson Galaxy Project, called Cat Pawsitive. The program is a life-saving initiative that introduces positive-reinforcement training to cats in shelters and rescues and aims to increase feline adoption rates and maintain cat “mojo.” The program is designed to keep adoptable cats mentally and physically active in a shelter or rescue environment.

The focus of Cat Pawsitive is on fun, positive reinforcement-based training sessions that go beyond playtime-as-usual to help cats maintain their mojo and connect more quickly with potential adopters. From teaching high fives and head bumps to “sit” and “come when called, Cat Pawsitive trainers at WVHS have been engaging with cats in a brand new way to really help them to “click” with adopters.

With most shelter cats currently in foster care, the Cat Pawsitive training is taking a bit of break. But, not completely. Cat Pawsitive has a way for cat fosters and YOU to use Cat Pawsitive at home. Using online tools, you can train your cat to high-five and more! Check out the video, then post your videos on our Facebook page, to share your success!
