Wenatchee Valley Humane Society Executive Director Dawn Davies announces retirement

WENATCHEE, WA- Dawn Davies, Executive Director of the Wenatchee Valley Humane Society, has announced her retirement for mid-June this year.

Over the past 10 years, Davies led the capital campaign to raise over $3 million to replace the old shelter building.  The new shelter opened its doors in 2015. Since then, it has become a regional resource center for pets by expanding programs such as the monthly food bank, behavior modification for dogs and cats, programs for community cats, low cost spay and neuter services for income qualified pet owners, an on-site barn for farm animals, a ring worm treatment room and the new veterinarian clinic with two full time veterinarians and support staff.

The success of these programs contributed to the 96% save rate for shelter animals at WVHS. Davies also served as a founding member of PAW (Pet Alliance of Washington) to mentor underfunded shelters and rescues to lift the save rate in the entire state to 90% save rate. The mission of PAW was realized at the end of 2020.

Davies had originally planned to retire in 2020, but with the onset of a world-wide pandemic, she delayed her decision.

“So much of my heart is invested in this organization.  When the world as we knew it changed in 2020, I knew that I had to stay to keep the Humane Society strong and well-funded,” Davies said. “My priorities during the pandemic have been to keep employees safe, with job security to put food on their table while still providing essential services for pets in our community and the people who love them. Pets don’t know the meaning of a pandemic.  They still need food, shelter, medical attention and love.”

The board of directors recently completed a nation-wide search for the next Executive Director.  A candidate has been selected and will be announced in early May.  Davies will stay until June 15th to facilitate a smooth transition.

“It’s very humbling to have been a part of this growth,” Davies said.  “I am grateful to our amazing staff, volunteers, board of directors and community for believing in me.  This journey has given me a lifetime of memories and stories.”
