Help when needed

Around 6 am on July 4th, a puppy's nearby distress cries pulled my heartstrings. I followed its cries for help not far from my yard. A lost or abandoned, six-to-eight-week-old beagle sat next to some bushes, head raised and howling for its family. I walked closer. It was scared and immediately went under the bushes. I coaxed to no avail. Oh how I wanted to take that cute little puppy home. Fortunately for Elsa, our resident dog princess, our mobile home court rules allow only one small dog.

Reluctantly, around 9 am, I called the Humane Society, hoping someone was on duty for the holiday. Their answering service took my call and the officer on duty called me within minutes. We exchanged the necessary information. I stood on the sidewalk near where the dog was hiding. In less that 15 minutes, the young woman arrived. Gently, the officer coaxed the puppy to her, cuddled it in her arms, and said they would take good care of her at the shelter. (The puppy is female, no longer an 'it')

Thank you, Wenatchee Valley Humane Society Shelter for rescuing lost or abandoned animals, even on holidays.
